June Book Club - The Premonition Michael Lewis’ “The Premonition” drew nine of us into a lively discussion on Wednesday, June 15. Many of us were happily surprised by this book’s readability, particularly its focus on individuals, who are profiled engagingly (if perhaps a bit too uncritically). On the other hand, we objected to its lack of citations, an index, or footnotes, and felt that it falls into the category of muckraking, skillfully arguing a point of view rather than presenting a balanced look at our public health system. Nonetheless, his conclusion is sobering: we don’t have a system at all but instead a barely linked network, hampered by bureaucracy, politics and a dysfunctional CDC, that fails to properly utilize many of the talented and devoted people in the field. We chose our movie for August’s Movie Night: “Victoria and Abdul,” from 2017, directed by Stephen Frears and starring Judi Dench as Queen Victoria. It’s based on the book of the same name by Shrabani Basu. We were proud of these Smithies, fictional but based on real alums who went to France in 1917 to aid the civilians whose lives had been torn apart by the war. Although we had some criticisms of the book, overall we felt the author presented likable and believable characters; depicted well both the confusion of war and the wretched conditions of the French civilians—some of which the Smithies shared; and imagined credible relationships that moved the story along. Special Speaker: Lisa Blanchard, Founder and Executive Director of the Grateful Garment Project - On Thursday night, April 22nd, we gathered via zoom to hear from Lisa Blanchard, the founder and Executive Director of the Grateful Garment Project (TGGP), a non-profit organization that provides victims of sexual violence the clothing and other resources they need to reclaim their dignity and begin the healing process. This year from the Bay Area Peninsula we had 74 applicants (73 first years, 1 transfer) and 15 students who had planned to matriculate in the Fall. With the announcement in early August that the campus would remained closed this semester, a few of those 15 students decided to defer their entrance.
